So... apparently the word cis is super problematic and makes some feminists uncomfortable. To which I reply, big fucking deal.
Sorry to be blunt, but as I understand the term, it just means someone who identifies with the outward gender of the body they were born with. And it's a scientific term, as in 'cis - on the same side' and 'trans - on the other side'. Which is not exactly lovely, but it's a terminology we can use to understand each other. What is the alternative? Trans man/woman vs man/woman? Clearly offensive. Normal man/woman? Even more offensive (and untrue). Birth man/woman? I don't have to spell out the problem with that do I?
Whatever your view, the fact remains that we have to talk to each other somehow and it's super useful to have words that we can use to describe each other without further alienating an already vulnerable group.
Ask yourself, is it really any skin off my nose? Can it help us communicate effectively? If so then I'm afraid we'll just have to get over it.
